Instructions

We will work in teams to complete each of the four sections below and create an informed (with citations from reliable sources) outbreak case summary that includes multiple perspectives and analyses of the implications of this event. Groups will work on their assigned sections, and all groups will contribute to the References and Critical Thinking Questions sections.

Overview & Module Objectives

The Mpox outbreak evolved quickly in 2022.  Why?  What methods were used to detect Mpox spread? Why did the name change? In this Module, we will investigate the 2022 Mpox virus outbreak that resulted in swift global changes...

Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

  • MO 2.1. Describe the emergence and response to the Mpox outbreak in 2022 (CO 1, 2)

  • MO 2.2. List three social, environmental, and economic factors that contributed to the change in name. (CO 2, 4, 5)

  • MO 2.3. Reflect on methods used to research Mpox and those used to address public perceptions and public health surveillance.  (CO 5, 6)

Glossary

  • Human monoclonal antibody: A lab-produced antibody that is made by combining a human antibody and a small portion of a rat or mouse monoclonal antibody. The human portion of the antibody makes the antibody less likely to be destroyed by the immune system while the rat or mouse portion of the antibody binds to the target antigen.

  • Orthopoxvirus: The genus of viruses that monkeypox is classified under.

  • JYNNEOS Vaccine: This is the main vaccine used in the U.S. and is used for Smallpox and Mpox

  • EA-IND protocol: An expanded access Investigational New Drug (EA-IND) protocol allows for the use of early empirical treatments to be used before FDA approval

  • Zoonosis: a virus transmitted to humans from animals
